BMW i8 Price and More Information

The i8 is a 2 +2 seater sports (ie, the rear only usable by young children) with a hybrid propulsion system 362 hp and a range of over 500 kilometers. There is no specific date for the start of sales, but BMW says it will during the second quarter of 2014. Its retail price in Germany will be EUR 126 000.

The name 'i' refers to a vehicle that does not use an internal combustion engine as the primary system drive, as is the case with the BMW i3. But there are fundamental differences between the two. While the i3 is marketed as electric or electric vehicle with extended-range system (using a small gasoline engine that is used to produce electricity and power the electric motor so that is what moves the car), the i8 is plug-in hybrid car.

The hybrid system consists of a gasoline engine of 231 hp and 320 Nm, three-cylinder 1499 cc, direct injection, supercharging with a turbocharger, variable "VALVETRONIC" and balancer shaft vibration-, an electric motor of 131 hp and 250 Nm-synchronous-and lithium-ion battery. BMW says that these elements have been developed by BMW, but also hints that not all are manufactured by them.

BMW says the i8 can accelerate from 0-100 km / h in 4.4 seconds , a model with a similar acceleration BMW is the 650i 449 hp ( 4.6 s ) . The maximum speed is 250 km / h (electronically limited) and is achieved by the heat engine , regardless of the level of battery charge .
Heat engine and gearbox - automatic six - relations are in the rear of the car , the electric motor, its reducing gear ( gear ratio are two levels ) and the power electronics are located in the front , the battery will placed at the bottom center of the chassis closer to the rear axle and the fuel tank under the rear seats (image) .
The heat engine is used to drive the rear wheels and the front electric , so that under certain conditions , when both motors work together , the i8 is an AWD car . This scheme provides a smoother operating in pure electric mode , a circumstance in which the i8 has front-wheel drive for 35 miles at a maximum speed of 120 km / h . In turn, the system can act on the motors in order to vary the distribution of drive force (BMW said input to curves " drive moments are applied on both axes configuration favoring greater force applied to the rear axle , in order to increase accuracy the beginning of the curve path ").
There are several commands that change the car running . There is a switch called ' Driving Experience Control ', which lets you vary between COMFORT mode and ECO PRO (which seeks the greatest possible autonomy , increasing up to 20% ) . In addition , activating the automatic transmission SPORT mode , you change the settings of some elements of the car ( engine , gas pedal, maximum retention , cushioning and gearbox ) . With this mode you can also select gears manually . There is another button called " eDrive " that activates the electric mode . It can be combined with COMFORT and ECO PRO modes . If you hit the throttle activates the combustion engine .

The fuel average consumption is 2.5 l/100 km. This value is comparable to diesel powered cars or gasoline alone or plug-in hybrid not because those that are pluggable travel an important part of the course approval without the heat engine has to be operated . It is in any case a very good value . For example, a Toyota Prius Plug- In Hybrid , a vehicle much slower, consumes an average of 2.1 l/100 km.
The battery is recharged primarily by plugging ( image mains) . For a full charge requires " less than three hours ' in a household socket and" within two hours " if using the BMW i wall box ( a recharging station that requires installation by a technician ) . The maximum usable capacity of the battery is 5 kWh .
Regenerative braking also exists : to lose speed , whether under braking or during retention phases , the electric motor works as a generator. The heat engine can also help in recharging the element that triggered alternator and starter.
The doors open upward pivoting and turning out ( image). The Cx is low for a coupe : 0.26.
I8 measured 4.69 m long , 1.94 wide and 1.29 high. The wheelbase is 2.80 meters. It is slightly longer , wider and lower than a Nissan GT -R . It's a bit longer than a 4 Series Coupe and much shorter than a 6 Series . A Series 4 weighs 1525 kg , the i8 , 1490 kg . To ensure that the weight is not too high ( compared to a Series 4, for example , the i8 has additional heavy elements like drums), BMW has resorted to the use of lightweight materials such as aluminum , magnesium or reinforced plastic carbon fiber ( CFRP ) . The weight distribution is 50 % on the front axle and the same in the rear .
The use of these materials is not anecdotal : monocoque is CFRP while the front and rear frames ( which are mounted on the suspension and the elements of the hybrid system ) are aluminum. These combined materials are also used in the doors: aluminum are visible on the outside and CFRP for the structure. Magnesium is used in the crossbar support makes dashboard ( no other production car and take him for some years ) . BMW claims to have used " foam in the air guiding channels of climate ' , which means a weight saving of 60%.

The side windows are made by superposing two layers of glass of 0.7 mm thickness which is sandwiched between an insulating sheet ( acoustic ), with the peculiarity that the overall weight is half the normal. According to BMW , get it chemically tempering glass .
Aluminum is also used in the suspension - independent four- wheels with variable hardness shock - and - wheels 20 inch - series , which are made by forging and casting , which allows a lighter structure . The tires are narrower than usual ( measures 195/50 the front and 215/45 rear).
Optionally wheels are the same size as the original made in CFRP , which are three kilograms lighter ( each) than aluminum .
There are three trim levels : " Nessus " (standard ), " Carpo " and " Halo ". They are differentiated by the colors of the upholstery and interior coatings , as well as other aesthetic details such as color wheel trim ring (image) . The instrumentation can be seen in a digital - information by giving the press release seems to be an optional element , which generates graphs of different shapes and colors according to the driving mode enabled . Standard on all trim levels is a browser linked to energy management system of the car, so that , depending on the path you enter , adapata times on and off the motors to the terrain and traffic conditions planned for that route.
All lights are LEDs i8 . Optionally there is a laser light beam (not specified what lighting functions ) . According to BMW the light intensity emitted by these lamps is 1000 times higher than that emitted by headlamps ledes .
Before presenting the production model , BMW showed a concept in 2011 as a coupe and as a convertible next year.

Under the name i8, BMW has shown two prototypes, one coupe body (in July 2011) and another called i8 Spyder convertible.

Both have 2 +2 seats and a hybrid propulsion system consisting of a gasoline engine and an electric motor giving 354 horsepower (CV) joint maximum.
The gasoline engine (223 hp) is located and acts on the rear wheels. The power (131 HP) positioned at the front, acts on the front wheels. The sum of maximum torque is 550 Newton per meter (Nm) which is a very high value. 300 Nm maximum torque corresponding to the gasoline engine and the electric 250 (technique of BMW i8 tab).

In the different videos shown here (the BMW i3 and BMW i8) clearly appreciate many aspects of the car, including the position of each motor and how and when to transmit motion to the wheels.

With these power and torque figures, the performance of the BMW i8 Concept is a sports car: it accelerates from 0-100 km / h in 4.6 seconds (5.0 seconds i8 Spyder). Its consumption is a very economical car: 2.6 l/100 km (3.0 l/100 km the convertible), although this consumption data should be read with caution, because the batteries are plug and charge while using of the batteries can even consumption of zero liters per 100 kilometers. According to BMW, in normal driving conditions, the consumption is between 5 to 7 liters per hundred kilometers. The gasoline engine has three cylinders and 1500 cc displacement.

The BMW i8 can run in pure electric mode, with a range that BMW stands at 35 kilometers (30 the convertible), but the German has not provided the data capacity of the battery, which is placed longitudinally between the front and back, in the area known as transmission tunnel. Is recharged via household socket in 1 hour and 45 minutes. For autonomy and the charging time conclude that the usable capacity of the battery should be around 7 kWh. This is an unsubstantiated assumption.

Like the BMW i3 Concept, the body structure is divided into the upper "Life" and the bottom "Drive" by what BMW calls the structure together as "LifeDrive". The structure of the car is made of aluminum and carbon fiber, with the stated objective of BMW to get a weight equivalent to that which would have a similar car with internal combustion engine and steel body.

The area or lower module consists of the suspension, steering and brakes, battery, motors and aluminum main frame and carbon fiber which is also the main responsible for the controlled deformation to absorb energy in a crash.

The module 'Life' is made of fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP carbon fiber-reinforced plastic), a material much lighter than steel. BMW constant emphasizes the importance weight means reducing electric cars, for their influence on power consumption and increased autonomy representing gram weight reduction. BMW claims that the use of fiber reinforced plastic with carbon unprecedented scale.

BMW also highlights the response of these materials in frontal impacts, side and rollover: "Steel structures require energy absorbing zones in large accident. Instead, CFRP built elements absorb large amounts of energy in surprisingly small areas. "

The wheels of the BMW i8 also are larger in diameter and narrower than the wheels that cars often carry this power and weight today. Narrower wheels help reduce rolling resistance, the benefit also of lower consumption and greater autonomy.

The items inside are also made from lightweight materials on this prototype, which has three screens for driver information.
