Car Review and Road Tests: Lexus IS 300h

The Lexus IS is a four-door sedan that measures 4.67 meters in length and is on sale from 35 900 euros (all prices). These characteristics position it as an alternative to the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Currently only version is sold "300h", which has a hybrid propulsion system consisting of a gasoline engine and an electric motor 181 hp 143 hp, giving a combined maximum power of 223 hp. The gasoline engine has a high -2.5 liters swept volume divided four-cylinder Atkinson cycle and runs. Has double injection (direct and indirect), variable intake and exhaust system and an exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR).

In late September 2013 will go on sale version "250" with a gasoline engine with six cylinders in "V" and 208 hp maximum power associated with an automatic transmission torque converter six relations.

I tried both versions, both move protrude excellent softness and refinement, but the 300h seems more advisable for their better relationship between performance and consumption. In any case, the IS 300h is not an alternative to a diesel sedan of similar size and power consumption regarding, especially if you are going to move out of town (more on Driving Impressions). No, nor will be diesel versions.

The Lexus IS 300h measures 4.67 meters long , 1.81 meters wide and 1.43 meters high and the wheelbase is 2.80 meters. It is three inches longer and slightly taller and wider than the previous model . The wheelbase is three inches higher ( comparative tab ) .
This larger than assumed , according to our measurements , an increased legroom for rear passengers than 7 inches. Another modification that has also helped increase the amplitude in the second row of seats is the smallest thickness of the front seat backrests . Anyway, the IS does not stand out against the competition for passenger space . The hole for the legs and the width to the height of the shoulders of the rear seats are average in its segment , not the headroom , dimension less favorable . In the hybrid version the trunk has a size slightly smaller than that of its competitors (450 liters). In the petrol engine version is 480 liters size . In both cases you can fold the rear seat backs , something that was not possible in the previous generation. More information about these and other aspects of the interior and luggage compartment Interior Impressions section .
The Lexus IS 300h costs between 35 900 and 52 500 euros depending on the trim level ( price of all versions of the IS 300h ) . Its starting price is lower than its size and power alternatives , whether gasoline or diesel ( Comparative list sorted by price ) . The version " 250 " will have a starting price , according to Lexus , about 37 800 euros. In our database , there is only a vehicle of similar size and power a lower price , the Audi A4 2.0 TFSI 211 hp (37 390 euros ; comparative listing ) .
There are five trim levels: " Hybrid ECO ',' Hybrid ',' Hybrid Drive ',' Hybrid Plus " and " F SPORT ". From the most basic level (" Hybrid ECO ") the equipment includes , among others , the following: knee airbag for driver and front passenger , xenon headlights for short and long lights , automatic lights, USB input and Bluetooth connection for mobile phones. This level can not , not even as an option , rain sensing wipers , parking proximity sensors and folding rear seatbacks . Nor can prepare to pull a trailer.

The level of equipment " F SPORT " is distinguished from the rest by furnishing details , exterior and interior , and it has a variable suspension hardness (" AVS "). It has a front bumper with prominent volumes , seats with more highlight on the sides and instrumentation very similar to that used by the LFA sports model , because all the information is shown through computer graphics , there is no physical needles ( image).
The unit I had in depth has been a Lexus IS 300h F SPORT . With this specification, the starting price is 49,700 euros ( price and technical equipment ) . It is a higher price than a Volkswagen Passat R -Line 2.0 TFSI DSG 211 hp (gasoline ) and a Volvo S60 R -Design D5 Aut 215 hp (Diesel ) , but lower than a Mercedes - Benz C 300 CDI Line Sport 4MATIC 231 hp (Diesel ) . Among them , the Lexus is the one with the most abundant standard equipment and the one with the lowest average consumption , but is also the slowest ( comparative tab ) . Compared to an Audi A4 2.0 TFSI multitronic 225 hp (gasoline ) with the optional " S -Line ", the Lexus is more expensive, but has a more generous standard equipment and if they are equal as far as possible , the Audi ends being more expensive ( comparative tab ) .
Standard in all cases , there is a rotating central command that lets you choose from three driving programs , " ECO ", " NORMAL " and " SPORT ". In the level " F SPORT " are an additional mode called "SPORT S + ", which modifies the hardness of the suspension . In addition, all hybrid versions have an additional program to drive in electric mode (" EV ").
Among the most advanced security features that can take this car , feature a pedestrian protection system (" Pop Up Hood ") that raises the hood a few inches to minimize the consequences of abuse and another traffic alert the driver back when driving reverse ( ' rear Cross Traffic Alert "). The latter is standard on all versions. Other items available are common with the GS , as the lights automatic short to long and vice versa (" Automatic High Beam ") , active cruise control (" ACC ") , the protection system before the collision (" PCS » ) , detection of objects in the blind spot and alert involuntary change lanes .
The audio system has a feature called " ASC " ( Active Sound Control) that using a frequency equalizer and audio system speakers , makes the engine sound inside and seemed stronger , according to Lexus , the one of larger displacement and power. In my view , the sound that you hear too mail generated and it shows that it is not produced directly by the engine . It's standard on the 300h and is not available for the 250 .

We have used the km77.com insurance comparator to calculate the cost of a policy to no excess for a Lexus IS 300h F-SPORT with the following conditions: the policyholder is a married man of 40 years, residing in Madrid and a spot in a garage collective, which runs up to 20,000 miles a year and has never had accidents. The company that gives the best price in this case is Mutua Madrileña, 1173 euros per year, but the quality of this policy is low -4.3 points of a possible 10. Qualitas Auto offers a policy for 1455 euros a year that has a higher quality -6.3 points over 10 - and a relationship between quality and very good price -7.61 points out of 10 -.

This is the third generation of the Lexus IS. The first was on sale between 1999 and 2006 (more information). The second hit the market in 2006 and was updated slightly in 2009 (more information) and 2011.
